For a long time, traditional wax has been the primary sealant to protect boats, but in recent years, many boat owners have switched to ceramic coatings. There are primary differences between using the two. Let’s take a closer look.

Traditional Wax

Wax has been the primary method used for protecting the outer surface of boats for a long time. While carnauba wax or synthetic polymer sealant costs less than a ceramic coating, it also does not last as long. Traditional wax sits on top of the pores of the gel coat or paint and does not bond well with the surface of the hull, resulting in the wax melting and quickly being stripped off with wear and tear on the boat’s surface. Salt, dirt and grime can easily find its way into the pores of the gel coat that results in stubborn oxidation.

Pros and Cons of a Traditional Wax Sealant

Pros:
inexpensive
fairly easy to apply

Cons:
does not protect against salt
does not protect against UV rays
does not protect against fouling release
incurs stubborn water marks
does not last long, has to be reapplied several times a year

Ceramic Nano Coating

A ceramic nano coating is a new addition to the boat and yacht world, but has been in use for a long time for other applications. Ceramic nano coatings are very durable, stain-resistant and glass-like in appearance. Ceramic coatings also are less affected by UV light exposure compared to traditional waxes. Easy to maintain, ceramic coatings while costing more than traditional wax sealants also last significantly longer. Many boat owners are also attracted to the wet shine and deep gloss of ceramic nano coatings that make boats look brand new. While your initial investment in marine grade ceramic nano coatings may be more, you will find that you spend less over the entire year to maintain your boat.

Pros and Cons of a Ceramic Nano Coating

Pros:
protects against UV rays
protects against oxidation
protects against corrosion
protects against stains
easier to maintain - less “normal” boat maintenance
offers all surface protection
is durable
offers high gloss and shine

Cons:
Does not protect against stubborn water spot
initial cost is more - requires more preparation
